Drywall Repair Cost: Holes, Cracks, Water Stains & Earthquake Damage

Published 2025 data puts an average drywall repair in the hundreds of dollars. The real variables are texture, ceilings and what caused the damage.

By LE Construction · Published October 6, 2026

Drywall repair is one of the most common small jobs in any house. The price depends less on the size of the hole than on texture, location and cause.

Published figures

HomeAdvisor’s 2025 cost guide puts drywall repair at an average of $610, with a typical range of $295 to $925. Ceilings, complex textures, water damage and repainting push repairs toward the higher end or beyond.

Types of repairs

  • Small holes and dents: filled, sanded and blended.
  • Larger holes: cut square, backed, patched with new drywall, taped and finished.
  • Cracks: opened and retaped so they do not reappear.
  • Nail pops: reset and refinished.
  • Water-stained ceilings: leak fixed and dried, damaged board replaced, stain-blocking primer, texture and paint.
  • Corner bead damage: replaced and refinished.

What drives the cost

  • Texture: smooth walls need more finishing; orange peel and knockdown need matching.
  • Ceilings: slower and harder than walls.
  • Painting: often the whole wall or ceiling so the repair blends.
  • Cause: a leak, rot or structural issue has to be fixed first.
  • Number of repairs: grouping saves money.

Earthquake damage

After a moderate earthquake, cracks at door and window corners and along ceiling seams are common. Most are cosmetic. Cracks that widen over time, doors that start sticking, or gaps at floors and ceilings point to movement worth checking before patching.

Water damage

Water-stained drywall comes back through regular paint unless it is dried and sealed with a stain-blocking primer. Soft or sagging drywall needs to be replaced.

Ventura County notes

Most homes here have orange peel or knockdown textures. Older homes in Santa Paula, Ventura and Ojai may have plaster, which is repaired differently.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a small drywall patch cost more than it seems it should?

Because of setup, drying time between coats, texture matching and painting. A small patch still needs several steps across more than one visit. Grouping repairs makes each one cheaper.

Do earthquake cracks in drywall mean structural damage?

Usually not. Cracks at corners and seams after a moderate earthquake are common and cosmetic. Cracks that widen, doors that stick, or gaps at floors and ceilings deserve a structural check before patching.

How do you fix a water-stained ceiling?

First fix the leak and let the area dry. Then replace soft or sagging drywall, apply a stain-blocking primer, match the texture and repaint, often the whole ceiling.

Can you match orange peel and knockdown textures?

Yes. We adjust the compound and spray or knife technique on a test area until it matches the surrounding wall or ceiling.
