The construction phase of a kitchen remodel is only part of the timeline. Design, selections, ordering and permits often take as long as the work itself. Here is a realistic sequence for a Ventura County kitchen.
Before construction
Estimate and design
We visit, measure, check the panel and plumbing, and talk through what you want. The layout is set, and you get a written estimate.
Selections and ordering
Cabinets, counters, appliances, tile and fixtures are chosen and ordered. Semi-custom and custom cabinets can take weeks to arrive. We order before demolition so the kitchen is not sitting torn apart.
Permits
Most kitchen remodels need a permit for plumbing, gas, electrical or walls. Timing depends on the office covering your address and whether plan check comments come back.
Construction
A typical sequence:
- Protection and demolition.
- Rough framing, including any wall removal and beam.
- Rough plumbing, gas and electrical.
- Rough inspection.
- Insulation and drywall, then paint.
- Cabinets installed.
- Counter templating, then fabrication.
- Counters set.
- Backsplash, flooring, fixtures and appliances.
- Final inspection and walkthrough.
How long it takes
- Cabinet and counter replacement, same layout: a few weeks of construction.
- Full remodel with layout changes: longer, especially with structural work.
- Older homes: add time for conditions found behind walls.
What slows it down
- Changing selections after ordering.
- Back-ordered cabinets or appliances.
- Permit and inspection scheduling.
- Hidden rot, wiring or plumbing problems.
Living through it
Set up a temporary kitchen with the refrigerator, a microwave, an electric kettle and a folding table. Paper plates help. We tell you the hardest days in advance.

Frequently asked questions
How long will I be without a working kitchen?
For a cabinet, counter and finish remodel with no layout change, typically a few weeks. Remodels that move walls, plumbing or gas take longer. Ordering cabinets and counters before demolition shortens the time the kitchen is out.
Why is there a gap between cabinets and countertops?
Stone counters are templated from the installed cabinets, then cut and polished, which commonly takes one to two weeks depending on the fabricator. The sink cannot be reconnected until the counters are set.
What delays kitchen remodels most often?
Late selections, back-ordered materials, permit timing and conditions found behind walls in older homes. Deciding early and ordering before demolition removes most of the risk.
Can I stay home during a kitchen remodel?
Most people do. Setting up a temporary kitchen with the refrigerator, a microwave and a small prep area elsewhere in the house makes it manageable.
