Your patio surface sets the look of the yard and determines how much upkeep you take on. The three most common choices in Ventura County are plain concrete, stamped or colored concrete, and pavers. Here is how they compare.
Plain concrete
Cost: The least expensive of the three. HomeAdvisor’s 2025 data puts concrete driveways, a similar installation, at about $4 to $20 per square foot depending on size, finish and site.
Look: Broom finish is practical and slip-resistant. Color and stain can warm it up for little added cost.
Maintenance: Low. Occasional cleaning and sealing.
Repairs: Cracks are hard to patch invisibly.
Stamped and colored concrete
Cost: HomeAdvisor’s 2025 guide reports stamped concrete at roughly $8 to $28 per square foot, with an average project around $5,298.
Look: Patterns that mimic stone, slate, brick or wood, in one or more colors.
Maintenance: Resealing every few years to protect color and surface. Can be slippery when wet unless a grit additive is used in the sealer.
Repairs: Patches are hard to blend with the pattern.
Pavers
Cost: Generally higher than concrete, varying widely with material: concrete pavers, clay brick or natural stone.
Look: Wide range of shapes and colors, and a crafted look.
Maintenance: Joint sand may need topping up, and weeds can appear in joints.
Repairs: The big advantage. Individual pavers can be lifted and replaced, and sections can be reset after roots or plumbing work.
Ventura County considerations
- Clay soils in parts of the county move with moisture; good base preparation matters for all three.
- Tree roots favor pavers.
- Heat inland: lighter colors stay cooler underfoot.
- Coastal exposure: sealing concrete helps slow salt damage.
- Drainage: whatever the surface, slope it away from the house and keep it below the stucco weep screed.
How to choose
- Tightest budget: plain or colored concrete.
- Stone look on a budget: stamped concrete.
- Long-term flexibility and easy repair: pavers.

Frequently asked questions
Is stamped concrete cheaper than pavers?
Usually, for the same area, because it installs as one pour. Published 2025 data puts stamped concrete at roughly $8 to $28 per square foot. Pavers vary widely with material and pattern.
Do pavers crack like concrete?
Individual pavers can crack, but the joints between them let the surface flex, and damaged pavers can be lifted and replaced. Concrete slabs crack along joints and sometimes elsewhere, and repairs are harder to blend.
Which patio surface is best near tree roots?
Pavers usually handle root movement better, since sections can be lifted and reset. Permeable pavers also let water reach roots. Solid slabs near large roots tend to lift and crack.
How long does a concrete patio last?
A well-built concrete patio with a compacted base, proper slope and control joints can last for decades. Most early failures trace back to poor base preparation or drainage.
