Concrete looks simple, and its price can look simple too, until you compare two bids and find one is half the other. This guide gives published 2025 figures for driveways and stamped concrete, explains what they include, and covers the Ventura County details that affect cost.

Published figures

HomeAdvisor’s 2025 guide puts the average concrete driveway at $6,400, with a typical range of $2,700 to $14,500, and $4 to $20 per square foot depending on size, finish and site.

For stamped concrete, it reports an average project of $5,298, a typical range of $2,955 to $7,798, and $8 to $28 per square foot, with simple patterns at the low end and multi-color borders and complex patterns at the high end.

What makes bids differ

Demolition and haul-off

Breaking out an old driveway and hauling it away is real work, especially if it is thick or reinforced. Some bids include it, some do not.

Base preparation

Compacting the subgrade, replacing soft spots and adding base rock is where cheap driveways cut corners. It is also what prevents settling and cracking.

Thickness and reinforcement

Driveways are thicker than walks, and thicker still for heavy vehicles. Rebar or mesh only helps when it sits in the middle of the slab.

Finish

Broom finish is the least expensive; exposed aggregate, color, stain and stamping each add cost.

The approach and permits

The section at the street usually needs an encroachment permit from the city or County, and it is built to their standard details.

Ventura County conditions

  • Clay soils in parts of the county swell and shrink with moisture, which calls for good base and drainage.
  • Coastal exposure in Oxnard, Port Hueneme and Carpinteria makes sealing and adequate cover over the steel worthwhile.
  • Hillside lots in Ojai, Thousand Oaks and Camarillo may need retaining walls or steps along the driveway.
  • Summer heat inland means pours are scheduled early and curing is watched closely.

Frequently asked questions

Does the published driveway price include removing my old driveway?

Not always. Demolition and haul-off of old concrete is a separate cost that depends on thickness, reinforcement and access. When you compare bids, check whether removal, base rock and the street approach are included.

How much more does stamped concrete cost than plain?

Published 2025 data puts stamped concrete at roughly $8 to $28 per square foot, compared with $4 to $20 for driveways in general. Pattern complexity, number of colors and borders drive the difference. Stamped surfaces also need resealing every few years.

What makes a driveway last longer?

A compacted subgrade and base rock, the right thickness for the vehicles using it, reinforcement set in the middle of the slab, and control joints at the right spacing. Those cost little compared with replacing a failed driveway early.

Do I pay for a permit on a driveway in Ventura County?

The approach between the sidewalk and the street is usually in the public right-of-way, and replacing or widening it needs an encroachment permit with its own fee. We include it in the estimate when your project touches the approach.
