Pergolas

A pergola is a roof made of open beams: posts, main beams and a grid of rafters or slats on top. It does not keep rain off the way a solid patio cover does, but it defines an outdoor room, softens the sun and gives vines something to climb. In a Ventura County garden, it can turn the corner of a yard into the place everyone ends up.

Pergolas can stand alone over a fire pit or a dining area, or attach to the house over a patio. They range from simple four-post structures to large ones with built-in lighting, fans and retractable shade fabric.

How much shade

Shade depends on the spacing, depth and direction of the top slats. Closer, deeper slats running east to west block more midday sun. Adding a shade cloth, a retractable canopy or climbing plants increases coverage. If you want real protection from rain, a patio cover or a pergola with a louvered or solid section may suit you better.

  • Wood

Cedar and redwood look natural and can be stained. They need periodic refinishing.

  • Aluminum

Low maintenance and resistant to rot and salt air, in wood-look or painted finishes.

  • Fiberglass and composite

Long spans and low maintenance, often used for columns.

Built for wind

A pergola is light but catches wind, especially with shade fabric or a dense vine on top. Posts need footings or anchors sized for uplift, not just weight, and the connections between posts and beams have to resist racking. Santa Ana winds in the fall are the real test, so we design for them.

Permits and placement

Permit rules for pergolas vary by city. Attached pergolas and larger freestanding ones often need a permit; some small freestanding pergolas may not. Setbacks from property lines apply in either case, and associations often have their own rules. In fire hazard zones, a pergola attached to the house is treated like other attached structures. We check before design.

Pergolas: FAQs

What does a pergola cost compared with a patio cover?

A pergola usually costs less than a solid patio cover of the same size, because it has less material on top and no roofing. Size, material and extras like lighting, fans and shade fabric make a big difference. We price both if you are deciding between them.

Does a pergola need a permit?

It depends on your city, its size and whether it attaches to the house. Many cities require permits for attached pergolas and larger freestanding ones. Setbacks and association rules also apply. We confirm the rules for your address and handle the permit if one is needed.

Wood or aluminum for a pergola?

Wood is warmer and more traditional, and suits Craftsman and Spanish-style homes. It needs refinishing every few years and is vulnerable to rot where it meets the ground. Aluminum needs almost no maintenance and does well near the coast. Fire-zone rules may favor noncombustible materials for attached structures.

Can a pergola be built over an existing patio?

Often, yes. If the existing slab is thick enough and in good condition, posts can be anchored to it with engineered connectors. Larger pergolas or thin slabs may need separate footings poured through the slab. We check the slab before designing.
