Outdoor living projects combine several trades: concrete, framing or aluminum structures, gas, electrical and sometimes plumbing. That is why published averages swing widely. This guide gives the figures, explains what they include and covers what changes the cost in Ventura County.

These numbers come from the published sources listed, not LE Construction quotes.

Patio covers: published figures

HomeAdvisor reports covered patio installations generally costing $8,243 to $26,255, about $17,154 on average. Fixr, pricing a 12-by-18-foot paver patio with an attached pergola cover, reports a range of $4,000 to $12,000 and a national average around $8,500.

The difference reflects scope. An open pergola over an existing slab is far less than a new slab with an insulated solid roof, fans and lights.

Outdoor kitchens: published figures

Angi data from mid-2025, as cited by SoFi, puts the average outdoor kitchen at $16,840. Outdoor kitchens are highly customizable, from a grill island to a full kitchen with refrigeration and a sink, so the range around that average is wide.

What drives the cost

Structure

Solid insulated covers cost more than lattice or pergolas. Freestanding covers need more posts and footings than attached ones. Attached covers need a ledger fastened to framing and flashed into the wall.

Utilities

Gas lines sized for all burners, outdoor-rated electrical circuits and, for sinks, water and an approved drain. Long runs across a large lot add up.

Concrete

A new slab, its base and any retaining walls on sloped yards. Stamped or colored finishes add more.

Appliances and counters

Built-in grills, refrigerators and burners range from basic to premium. Counters that hold up outdoors, like granite or porcelain, cost more than tile.

Ventura County factors

  • Coastal yards need corrosion-resistant hardware and appliances rated for marine air.
  • Inland heat in Santa Paula, Fillmore, Moorpark and Simi Valley favors insulated covers and fans.
  • Fire zones around Ojai, Somis, Camarillo and the Conejo Valley require compliant materials for attached structures and limit open flames.
  • Associations in many neighborhoods review covers and structures.

Frequently asked questions

Why do covered patio prices vary so much between sources?

Because they price different projects. One source may price a patio slab with a pergola, another a solid insulated roof with lights and fans. Size, materials and whether a new slab is included change the total a lot.

What is usually the most expensive part of an outdoor kitchen?

Often the appliances, especially built-in grills, refrigerators and side burners. Utility runs come next: gas sized for every burner, electrical with GFCI protection, and water and a drain if you include a sink.

Does a patio cover need a permit, and does it add much cost?

Most attached patio covers need a permit in Ventura County cities, and the fee is a small part of the total. The engineering for footings and connections, and in fire zones, compliant materials, have more effect on price.

Is it cheaper to build the slab and cover at the same time?

Usually. Footings for the cover posts and conduit for lights and gas can go in with the slab, avoiding cutting concrete later. We price the slab, structure and utilities together.
